Busy Day in Downtown Melbourne.

Hi again,

Blogging is about happenings, so here is my happening for today. I sell computers on eBay as a side-line. They are a complete system, including monitor, keyboard, mouse and DVD burner.

Of course I fully test every system I sell, as I give a good old-fashioned 100% money back guarantee. If you treat everybody the way you would LIKE to be treated yourself then you can’t go far wrong.

So, I’ve sold this P4 system, fully tested, and it gets delivered to a customer in New South Wales. First they leave me positive feedback (thank you) and say the system is great. I of course return the positive feedback, replete with appropriate superlatives, and consider the matter done.

Then today I get an email from the buyer: “There is no sound coming OUT of the box! We can hear sound through the headphones plugged in to the front of the box - but there is no sound coming OUT of the box”. I am a little mystified, as I fully test the sound and vision by playing CD’s and DVD’s before I ship the system.

I then thought about what the customer had said - “there is no sound coming OUT of the box”. Then I twigged. They probably had an old PC with onboard sound and crappy built in speaker and were not used to using external speakers.

Sure enough, when I emailed the client with instructions on how to plug in their speakers the answer came back that they did not have any, as their old PC had the sound “in the box”. She was going out to buy some speakers and she would let me know how she went.

I learned a couple of good lessons here. Firstly, most home PC users have not got much idea about the different bits of PC’s and how they work. They just know how to turn it on and start using some software or the other. Secondly, you should never assume that the person at the other end of a long distance conversation (or any conversation, for that matter) is getting the same mental picture that you are. The art of communication sometimes relies on asking clarifying questions to ensure that you are both on the same page, so to speak.

Well the lady bought her speakers and the sound worked just fine. So all is well that ends well and I can now sit back and enjoy a bit of blogging.

That was my day. How about yours? Hope you had a good one.

Cheers

Allan Barker
